Personally I think this all depends on how you are going to do the project:1) Long-distance option: Hire a GC and or Project Manager whom you trust to knock out the job, maybe swing by once a week to get eyes on or have a trusted source get video/pictures to make sure its going as planned.

I can use the cash I have on hand to furnish the upstairs and go the cheapest route possible in the basement to make it livable, wait 6months to a year to save up enough money to knock out the rest of the renovations (egress windows, floors, upgrade appliances) and end up buying a few things twice.
