Section 8 in LA is not easy to find so the landlords can be picky, and seeing all those kids means less desirable.

@Dan Heuschele Mistakenly, I failed to mention that my goal for house hacking here in LA  is to significantly (30%-50%) reduce my living expenses, which I think is a reasonable goal for the market here and given the square footage I would need to live comfortably (I have 3 kids and 2 live at home). 

@Sin Hang Lai There is a 6 month period after the auction you can pay off the minimum bid or the amount bid and acquire the property if the City owns it. 

This was a transfer case from San Bernardino to LA, so even more issues there. publication done in SB county, but now has to be done in LA. I

I think Boyle Heights is interesting because Downtown LA is such a hot market now but the existing housing stock is really old even by LA standards and a lot of the housing seems to be on small lots too .

Personally, being born and raised in CA,I left two times due to cost of living,and cost of doing business.Instead of LA I would recommend Vegas,BUT WAIT WAIT WAIT for this CRASH!

Since I had been saving for years to buy a house in LA, I had ~$50k saved (still not enough for a house in LA but at least a nice chunk toward it).
