@Dan Heuschele Mistakenly, I failed to mention that my goal for house hacking here in LA  is to significantly (30%-50%) reduce my living expenses, which I think is a reasonable goal for the market here and given the square footage I would need to live comfortably (I have 3 kids and 2 live at home).

@Sin Hang Lai There is a 6 month period after the auction you can pay off the minimum bid or the amount bid and acquire the property if the City owns it.

I think Boyle Heights is interesting because Downtown LA is such a hot market now but the existing housing stock is really old even by LA standards and a lot of the housing seems to be on small lots too .
