Nowadays if my heart feels charitable I donate to charity or volunteer my time to a cause instead. 

I would like to have a discussion specifically about some of the aspects of systemic racism I've had to deal with at some point somewhere else, with moderators who might volunteer for the extensive work it will probably need when things get out of control and people fight instead of communicate.

Any time I assist anyone within my circle of closely affiliated colleagues, I always establish a compensation structure upfront beforehand to avoid any awkward conversations down the line unless I already decided to volunteer my time.

I've found volunteering is very helpful, too, in "normal" times. 

If you don't have that you probably don't have title and any improvements you make may be as a volunteer and belong to the true owner whoever that is. 

If you friend is already enjoying his career, pick his/her brain and volunteer to help.

We have a friend who is very experienced in framing up walls and volunteered to come to help us out with that.
