You can get a decent quality tub without breaking the bank and if you  layout the bathroom where the tub faucet is in the wall you can save some money because floor mounted tub fillers and their rough in are are expensive.

How bad do things have to get for them to still break even and how bad does it have to be for them to lose money.

I do know that the rent collected from my buddy and the tenant in the midterm rental will come close to, if not break even, with my mortgage, taxes, and insurance.

If your contract states that "time is of the essence", you could have forfeited your right to break the contract and get your EMD back simply by not adhering to the dates specified in the contract.
