@Scott Trench - When I was in corporate I worked west coast for a few years and got up at 8 am and was in the office by 10 am and then did east coast for a few years and got up at 5 am and was in the office by 7 am.

I definitely understand that incorporating REI into an existing Solo 401k portfolio can be beneficial, in terms of diversification and security/income, and that the use of this instrument is not directly comparable to personal REI activities (i.e. using after tax dollars).The challenge for me is that I'm actually getting stuck at this exact apples vs. oranges question.
