I was growing tired of the 26 -36 weeks/yr living in hotels, but was sitting on a reasonable pile of retained earnings (had no time to spend any of it).In 2008/2009, the Canadian dollar was at a high (par or better to the USD) and it was not a good time to repatriate earnings that were in USD or EUR, so I elected to become a {mostly} silent partner in a few small apartment buildings in New England {I did help with electrical, communications and {what is now called} "smart home" features during the renovations of a higher-end building}.

If you see a complex that has "racquet" in its name...run...as those fees will be in the $400 range due to the added amenities.I have helped many Canadian winter visitors search for houses and condos, which are almost always booked for the Jan-March high season at least 8 months in advance.
