The added sparkle would be a noticeable upgrade in the rental market.When painting, you could choose the same color for both ceiling and walls to de-emphasize the sloping roof, and choose materials with very little contrast throughout the room, to again add to that illusion of space.Absolutely anything you do to that room would be an improvement so you're lucky in that you really can't go wrong!

Just read an older BP article on cheap bath upgrades: Paint, new toilet seat and handle, new door handles and hinges, new fixtures for shower and sink, brighter light bulbs so it sparkles, and scrub the hell out of it until it's shiny and new.

I use incandescent to get a warm glow, LED in kitchens and garages, clear bulbs to get sparkle and use the old style yellow filament bulbs to highlight a great light fixture.
