Is it starting to look just as expensive to walk away from that car, as it would be to write a check and pay it off (if you wanted to keep the car)?

If you are financing, make sure you don't have anything new appear on your credit report (like a new car....), as the bank will check your credit report one last time right before sending the money to make sure it's still safe to lend to you.

I'm not looking at a car as an investment, not looking at a car as an appreciating asset - I see as an expense (high one at that).  

If a borrower placed a value of $500 on a late model car with no debt, he might also want to save photos of the car as a total write-off wreck, if that is the case.  

I even found out she got herself a new car a few months later!

They had her car as collateral on the loan and let it go to the family.

I want to pick a place that is at most 90 minutes by car (a place that I can visit at least once a week). 

I’m not sure the car-as-proxy is a reliable guide.

And a bonus is that it will make the garage usable for 1 car (as opposed to now when it's advertised as just storage), so perhaps that will add value.
