IMO, 1 & 3 are speculations and sensitive to the specific situation. 2 will be a factual and ongoing problem.

It is sometimes too hard, too frightening, almost like asking for rejection, to share such sensitive information with someone [even a landlord] they do not even know. 

There must be some kind of safeguards that can be used though to prevent this situation.

I havent found much info except for a few general tips such as be sensitive to their loss, etc.

Remember, not all mold is visible, and everybody’s sensitivity level is different.

Vinyl tile is still very sensitive to temperature changes.

But tenants can be quite sensitive to even small changes.

I've never heard of the burners going on themselves, since there are usually a number of safeguards involved.

Most states allow you to take possession of the property if it has been abandoned to secure and safeguard it against any potential damage.
