@Colleen F. if we go to court it wouldn’t be because of me, they are just threatening with doing it since I don’t want to pay the quote from the shop.

He is threatening me that he will take court action if I don't pay for the damage of his driveway due to the root damage, but I was wondering what California law generally says.
