I would look at joining the trades(electrician, pipe fitter) especially if you could get on the traveling circuit working at nuclear plants.

As @Jay Hinrichs pointed out, the sky didn't fall, it wasn't the apocalypse, and I might remind that at same time there was nuclear attack drills at all schools because same time we were knee deep into the cold war.

From the previous post, I feel like the HVAC vendors are pushing for the costly nuclear option. 

One of the major employers, Oyster Creek Nuclear Plant, started to shutdown in May of this year and as it closes down it takes with it many jobs for people in the area.

That's like saying "Hey, let's sort what to do with a Nuclear Power Plant, I know, let's put some average ever-day elec. users in this group to decide how to run it". 

Not long ago they had "the" infrastructure and YES were a nuclear power.
