The rentals are the easiest thing to ditch and your brain has decided that you need to let something go... which is easier if you hate it rather than still love it (as you mentioned you previously did). 

It is the judge's job so to speak to know the law but yeah having sat in more courts then I want to I understand it isn't always what the law says its whats easiest. 

At most I would give them a gift certificate to go out to dinner on me..... thats it.

Also, please do not get "gift funds" from a family member if you plan to repay that gift.
