There are about 14 million millionaires in the United States so only about 4% of United States population.Personally I like accredited investors that have already made alot of money and not looking for high risk deal and just want that steady coupon and if they get upside great but not required to invest in the deal as equity upside is a secondary focus versus the safety and stability of the investment.

But ignoring the safety of your guests could cost you everything that you own. 

Unless I think I can time the market, I am going to keep deploying my cash in something better than that.I am also bearish on treasuries, which I think will generally see yields rise (and values decline) on anything with longer maturities (yield curve normalization and long term downward pressure on the ratings/"safety" of US gov't debt).

If you just want to throw out a general amount for safety, I would say 15k, but there is a lot of good advice above on how to judge it.
