I've also seen the results, soaked and falling ceilings, water running down walls during heavy storms, etc. 

you can cut out the damaged pipe and replace with a section of pex and two shark bite connectors.If the insulation is soaked, you will need to replace.  

(they had a dog and a cat) One of the animals had been urinating so much in one spot that it had soaked all the way through the hardwood AND the subfloor AND into the joists below the floor!

In a year with less non-RE income, I was able (forced) to soak up a lot of suspended passive losses, and it pissed me off.
