Another possibility might be to buy a SFR (preferably on a corner lot) and place a Tiny Home on Wheels as an ADU unit.

Often you can gently bend the two prongs (not the ground) out a tiny bit.

Would like to build:--- single family home on the site that I will use part of the time as a vacation home, but rent out while I'm not there (would like to use a DTI-based construction loan to fund this)--- multiple studio cabin units for guests around the property that will be rented year-round (think tiny a-frames, etc. - will build in cash)Question: can I use a traditional DTI-based residential construction loan for the SFH I'd like to build on this land? 

current harris county resident. if you purchase a duplex with an fha loan or conventional loan and you place a tiny house as an adu on property and rent out the duplex.

With the added (tiny) possibility that we could end up going out to LA for an extended commitment, possibly ending up there for a good while.

And its a teeny tiny loan, harder to shop.

When you contract directly with a seller, you can try to get away with a tiny earnest money like $10 or some such.
