You can "protect" the original siding with the vinyl until someone decides to restore it, kind of like the shag carpet over beautiful hardwoods

All hard wood floors, pretty scratched up and a bad smell of what we think is cat or dog urine.

We have also used the Allure (tabs and click) planks from HD and they have either performed well (maple, bamboo) or failed miserably (apple).I tend to use a fair amount of engineered hardwood or commercial grade (high-density core  & AC5, AC6) laminate.
