Egress windows are expensive and if below grade you need window wells, there are precast concrete versions as well as large metal versions maybe even vinyl or PVC versions.

This tenant recently sold her brand new home and is now living in my 1,000 sq ft home built in 1950 and she bombards me daily with complaints about things being old and gross (literally), even asking us to replace all of the electrical outlets and build regular closet doors (ours are floor to ceiling metal doors).

To install them, you do drill right through the asphalt shingles, but any reputable installer also installs high quality metal flashing over every penetration to prevent leaking.

I am fairly certain that the metal poles are all set in cement under the dirt, I pulled one of out and it was braced in with cement so I am guessing that the rest are as well.
