Once it's accomplished you can splurge and it won't affect your net worth negatively. 

Personally, I'd always splurge for flooring and not a new fad color - just a nice traditional color hardwood-style flooring (laminate is fine). 

If you could "Splurge" a little and put in LED Recessed Canns - you might not have to change the bulbs for 10 years.
