If the goal is hands-off long-distance investing then I would consider starting single-family homes, they are way easier to manage :) 

Who do you have currently in your home market that you can trust - generally you are going to want a trusted "core team" to do long-distance investing - for a flip, should definitely include a trusted partner and/or contractor + agent + lender at the very least

I don't know your entire situation, careers, commutes, etc., so only you can decide what fits your budget and your lifestyle best.
