Living in the outer boroughs isn't the most attractive given long commutes, less vibrancy etc.Lets say im considering house hacking a 3 unit multifamily in the bronx or deep brooklyn for example.

I see listings that fit this from time to time in Brooklyn (3 bedroom condos in east Crown Heights go for $500k still for example) but your best bet might be a duplex in the Bronx.

Maybe you live in a suburb you wouldn't normally consider (Robbinsdale, Crystal, Brooklyn Center.....etc.)

@Chris Albanese I am from NYC as well and wanted to invest in somewhere in Brooklyn or Queens but even the most remote areas in NYC the prices are just too high so I decided to go to Trenton, NJ.

I live in Brooklyn, NY where I don't see how it is possible to make money on a buy-to-rent strategy. 

This may not be NYS specific, but I'm looking to invest here so I've been going to the auctions at the Brooklyn courthouse.My question is: When you buy a property at the courthouse auction, the paperwork talks about a mortgage balance, judgement, tax lien, etc.
