I've been considering ways to set up a basic home surveillance system just for my own peace of mind while the property sits empty (and maybe even into the future) and was wondering if anyone else has done this? 

Purchase price: $130,000 Cash invested: $15,000 3bed 2.5 bath in a gated and surveilled community.

Granted 1) we're not having to furnish the entire place, 2) we can let it ride as-is for a few weeks while not seriously affecting bookings, and 3) we also have time to see what kinds of Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals we can get to save cost.I put us in the middle of the spectrum of cash vs time being most important because we'll spend more money to get the stuff but save time on the acquisition side.

What about $300 for an 8-camera video surveillance system?

I have seen people put up "video surveillance" signs but there is liability here so you want to have more of a "You maybe on camera sign" so you are not creating a "safe zone" with people assuming they are safe in a recorded area.4.

@Julie Williams,In an area that has theft, but is otherwise desirable, consider a well-placed video surveillance and security system.

Place signs in public areas warning people that it is under surveillance. 

Carpet the place with video security and stick video surveillance signs EVERYWHERE.
