When the tenants demanded return of their deposit, I immediately acknowledged my mistake and returned the deposit.This does not change the fact that they are responsible for these damages.

Save that text message or email to the previous tenant, especially if they acknowledge they received the message.I would also take a precautionary measure to photograph where the vehicle is located and photograph the condition it is in prior to the tow.

When a contractor "screws you over" usually it's because he bit off more than he could chew and is too prideful to acknowledge it and also isn't good with managing money to be able to eat the cost.
