Many other types of visas also qualify for a SSN.You need to be a legal resident (green card, H1, L1, etc) for a mortgage.As someone who has lived on 3 continents, I would take a copy of their passport and visa, get employer references and take first month, last month and security deposit.If you are worried about a visit from ICE, consult an immigration lawyer regarding their legal status.

So, if a person gets pulled over and has a DL but no resident alien card or passport on him, does that mean he would be arrested?

Many have a PR (Permanent Resident) cars, or will have their home passport with work visa documentation, again from the US and on very official looking paper.

I would require a copy of photo ID such as his driver's license from his home country, passport ID page, visa information that allows him legal entry to the U.S., and a letter from the school verifying his employment.
