But I would not do multiple background/multiple genders folks as room-mate as there would be higher safety issue and continuous drama.Also if you can, try to find property where you can divide the wall, and add bathroom/walls/kitchen,etc.

I think that there are two camps trying to make this change.The PC camp is trying to make the change because the word is allegedly gendered (even though landlady is available, landnonbinary and landgenderqueer are not yet popularized).

In my experience I would recommend avoiding any mention of an applicant’s family status, gender, etc. when discussing your tenant placement decision  (“couple with 3 year old daughter”, “single male”, etc.).
