It also helps airflow in the home.Wrap your paint pans, rollers, brushes etc with kroger or walmart  sacks to keep paint fresh for the next day.

The most common problem is low airflow caused by dirty filters but there are other reasons, such as problems with the supply fan, clogged coils or low refrigerant levels.

On the other hand, one of my houses has an HVAC unit that is sized a little too big for the house, and if I don't change the filter every two months it doesn't get enough airflow and the entire unit freezes up. 

Is there too little airflow? 

Its amazing how much dust, animal hair, etc builds up, restricting air flow.

The air temp was fine, but the airflow was terrible because of all the crap in the vents so the system was working extra hard.I usually try to inspect the meter with and without the HVAC system running to make sure that is actually the culprit.  

Dirty filters cause probably 25-50% of hvac issues in rental homes... it restricts the airflow, causing equipment to fail or not work correctly.

As long as there is air flow, it will still work.

This means making sure all rooms receive heat and airflow on a consistent basis.
