(I'm not either, for level setting)... and to that end, you are about to engage in a legal fight - presuming you want to be compensated - be it for violating your right to privacy, the damage the police did, etc.

My husband who is a realtor in TX is trying to sell our rental property.We are in option period.Our renter called us today to inform us that buyer texted him to make inquiries about his profession, background check, and credit score.This was shocking for me to hear because we have been super transparent with buyer and buyer's agent about property, renter's lease etc.Is this action not a a direct violation of privacy rules and regulations?

Simply asking for your bank and branch does not provide the landlord with the ability to inquire about your accounts or their content - under Canadian privacy law that would require explicit written consent.That said, in instances where applicants are self-employed or graduate students living on research grants, we often request bank statements as a means to verify ability to pay.Here in Canada, a landlord may request a social insurance number (SIN)  - our equivalent to a Social Security Number in the U.S.A. - but they cannot require it and the applicant is under no obligation to furnish it (again, due to privacy law).
