Any particle episodes of the podcast?

The particle board under the plastic coating does not stand up to moisture, so its important to keep the plastic like covering intact. 

That's the route I would have taken, but unfortunately after removing the carpet  I found that the treads are made of ugly particle board.

The air particles are physically changed and will irritate your lungs, sinuses, or eyes.

:D Hit it hard with aerosol while it's running. 

We use those aerosol smoke bombs from the janitorial supply that neutralize "fire smoke smell" which is harder to eliminate that nicotine .They're not expensive .. two or three cans in one small room , close it all up for at least two days.

These odors attach to minute solids floating in the air, most are invisible, and each particle has a positive electrical charge because it is missing an electron.

And that will be when you discover that MDF and particle board products don't serve well in those locations.
