Your best precaution is to make sure your soffit vents, gutters and downspouts are clear in the summer. 90% of "snow" damage I've encountered is ice damming.

Some of the flooding in Mississippi is being caused by engineers who are opening dams and diverting flood waters through man-made efforts -- it's unclear if FEMA will pick up the cost of this damage, even for those who have insurance!
