A normal IRA is usually held at some investment bank like Charles Schwab (an IRA "custodian") and they only let you invest in certain things like stocks.

@Charles Soper, wow, that's unfortunate, but hopefully the media doesn't decide to focus in on these cases as examples of "investor slumlords" and place all investors under this category as they've done in the past.
