You could form a partnership with a couple people, delegate roles and start buying properties in a JV.  

You don't need amenities like short-term and the people looking for MTR has expanded from travel nurses to displaced homeowners, future buyers, just sold sellers, relatives coming into town, insurance companies, etc.

Our local market in Columbus has been pretty incredible with price points lower than markets like Austin or Nashville, with a better economic outlook than similar large cities of over 900k people. 

That's exactly the reason I didn't want to go with one of the big property management software systems people mentioned above.

The first way you get to learn the secret behind doors, see things get ugly, get your hands dirty, it may or may not save you money but will get you the working experience you needed so you can appreciate the work and know how to talk to people.

Doubt this is the final version as the "smart" people in the city understand Detroit is coming back and needs to keep welcoming investment instead of putting up roadbloacks:)As many STR landlords have learned in other cities and in oversatuarated areas, it's always good to have a backup plan!

And the fact that these people are willing to fetch your materials from wherever makes the whole thing even more questionable.
