Lowes used to have some nice material, but then they cheapened it and it looks more like plastic again (it used to have a faux wood grain).

Any reputable contractor has material accounts everywhere and doesn't expect to be paid for labor S/he hasn't yet performed. 

It could be possible that he is an honest guy and just using outdated marketing methods which is DAMAGING his brand and reputation. 

Navigating this journey alone can be time-intensive, so partnering with a reputable team can make all the difference.
