@Elizabeth Goff That’s what I’m hearing  consistently, they bury you in maintenance and unnecessary fees.

Keep it simple, it is an unnecessary expense and time you do not need to spend.  

This is often overlooked or disregarded as unnecessary.

This will make it fly under the radar until you have an AO.By the way - a basement contractor may not be the best choice, as they will sell you work, it is better to go with a basement consultant who has no interest in selling you unnecessary repairs. 

Maybe some things you did or used at first that you realized later were actually unnecessary, over the top, or just a waste of time and resources? 

I get my HELOCs through WF and they too are painfully slow and require a lot of unnecessary paperwork.

A warning -- there are a LOT of yahoo contractors and shady moneymen in this side of the business that are just looking for a way around what they see as unnecessary code requirements.
