They typically have a stairway that leads from the kitchen to the basement.

Then suddenly this swarm of pigeons come flying down the stair way filling every inch of air space to the point I can't really breath and for sure I can't see to make my way back down the stairs. 

I had a contractor to come and remove the carpeting in the stairway and the entire downstairs.

There are two sets of stairways that I'm a little concerned about. 

Complete a kitchen and walk-out stairway in the basement in existing home and rent the main home as an upper unit and lower unit or by room.Financing:We owe $148k and the current home is valued around $225k.

I have a small roof that cover the stairway to basement.

This can include stairways.

The loft has a separate door in the stairway so it is not connected to the upper unit (although the current tenants in the upper are the ones who have access to this loft).

Its a little frustrating because of the wear and tear (and maintenance) the stairway takes, yet half the people going up stairs are not only not my tenants....they don't even live in my building. 

We did receive a settlement from the city for lack of use and access to that portion of our property but we still need to maintain it, and get equipment down there,  we can access it by a stairway but for larger items we have walked our mower, over the corner of the neighbors lot.
