If you signed a lease that told you that you are responsible for repairs if damage occurs, then you landlord may have a case for the toilet repair. 

The damage done to roof with mounting and other insurance issues usually outweighs any positives.Sounds like they have a company exec or hired contractor to call on possible sites and see who they can get cheap rent from. 

I have a security deposit for 1 months rent, but they did not leave the home in great condition (minor damage to drywall, did not re-paint rooms they painted upon moving in, furniture left behind).I'm looking for recommendations on how to handle this situation.

If not, will you be liable in the future if any damage or harm comes to him or future tenants?

@Traci Cameron sounds like the house sustained severe damage from a fire inside and is currently not livable. probably selling as is and the house needs extensive work.

(Sale price minus assets, minus inventory)  Good will is easily damaged by a rogue employee or crazy customer.Good luck!
