It's good that you see the value in, CFP fee-only advisors now that you've experienced this, I've heard countless horror stories of investors nearing retirement and in retirement getting tangled up in investments that don't fit their needs with large portions of capital that they can never recover from.  

I still made a lot of mistakes, but my investment in my education helped me avoid countless others I would have made.

Also, this is the United States and there a countless stories where people who came from nothing and have nothing become wealthy in no time.
