We don’t know all the circumstances, BUT, from the small amount of information in the OP, it does seem like the OP believes that to earn a commission the broker/agent needs to represent the buyer all the way through closing and that if the buyer terminates agreement before closing the agent no longer needs to be paid.  

Typically each brokerage sets a minimum broker administrative commission (Also known as a BAC fee) that gets paid by buyer or seller (both sides will have one paid by the client). 

If you work for a brokerage who doesn't even know how to help you get access, that is a problem, but NYC is not like other areas.

Consider roles like property management, real estate brokerage, or project management at a development firm to build up more industry experience.
