I'm looking to attend REIA meetings again myself but only if their mission is mostly networking and not sales oriented.

There are lots of opportunities closer to the downtown area still, and if you are looking for a long term investment there has been growing hype about the Lonestar Brewery/Mission Trails area.

There are some PML organizations, such as Christian, Catholic and other religious based organizations, whose mission is to help minorities and first time homeowners to get into homeownership and real estate.
