There are still some travel agents around even with the likes of Expedia and Kayak, so no, real estate agents won't become obsolete, and I think real estate agents can provide more value in the future than travel agents can because a home purchase is a much bigger deal than a trip and people don't want to be penny-wise and pound-foolish (for the most part).

Talk to people in the neighbourhood....simply ask them "do you happen to know what rents are like around here".A bit of time spent "pounding the pavement" and you should have a pretty good idea about rent.
