The only other option is homelessness, which in my market (Maine) isn't viable.

California is setting up homeless camps to gather all homeless to prevent the disease from spreading.

I think some people forget how the economy is all connected. ...if more people start working from home, that small restaurant next to the office park loses their core customer base...out of business...unemployed. ...if more people start working from home, less cars on the road, less oil consumed...oil is the main driver of the economy.

The homeless don't want shelters.

I've encountered angry tenants, squatters, gang members, crazy homeless people, etc. 

Everyone here knows slumlords that deserve every bit of heat they get for rotten properties but tenants are afraid of becoming homeless. 

If you really need to know, just try being homeless for a week and see what you're willing to put up with afterwards.
