Since you stated you are going to replace the carpet I recommend spraying "Odoban" (about $10 for a gallon to dilute) or some other cleaner/smell remover over the pad (if you don't replace it since it will hold the odor) or on the floor if you remove the pad.

If your rafters are not 12 inches (or more) then you might have to consider spray foam insulation, and that costs way more than fiberglass.

For example, I have a brick building that has 1/2 inch furring strips screwed into the brick, thick wire mesh attached to the furring strips, and at least half an inch of plaster (not drywall) sprayed onto the wire mesh.So you can't use the walls for running anything, and my electrical conduit actually runs on the floor joists, with the subfloor fitted around the conduit.

They then broke in that night and ripped up all the counter tops, ripped the doors off all the cabinets, ripped all the drywall off the walls, spray painted the carpeting and tile floors, tore up the wiring, ripped the copper from the A/C, and kicked holes in the bathtub surrounds.

I would also use something to remove the writing if it is really dark. goof off, magic  eraser, spray cleaner acetone.
