Many have the attitude to seek exceptions or ways around something rather than accepting restrictions or the rules of the game, almost as if they don't apply to them or they are so endowed with some superior gene that they can get by with whatever.

And you need the ability to get a several months of expenses via liquid investments or a loan (heloc/credit card/relatives). some of these options are superior to others but your risk tolerance and financial situation will dictate your approach.

However, it's oftentimes better to buy a superior deal 100% in cash than an inferior deal with a mortgage.

Personally I have 2 STRS, one in Talent, OR - wherein Covid is so low in numbers they are doing active contact tracing ( as of today ), and One in Superior, CO, near Boulder. 

And really most every other profession in our free country.I defiantly agree with you about the perception that just because some one is on BP has done a pod cast or lots of posts they are then held by many to be of superior knowledge skills or financial condition... 

However, as @Alina Trigub pointed out, the 401k is often far superior to the SDIRA.There's much misconception regarding the role of custodians and administrators, as well as the extent to which they should be relied on for advisory services.There are many excellent companies, but as the number of custodians/administrators has swelled it has become increasingly difficult to navigate the space.

In our area, I would caution you to choose your neighborhood carefully, to make sure you don't lose value by building something out of character with (or superior to) the surrounding homes.

DVR is still superior in my mind, most of the cloud ones still aren't quite...there yet...if you're looking for constant and consistent recording of everything that happens.If, however, you just want to open an app and view what's going on with limited ability to go back in time and are willing to put up with some gaps in recording, probably ARLO or ARLO PRO are the best at the moment for easy setup and interfaces.
