I would start by finding areas you actually WANT to live and go from there.Picking a place to call home simply because it has a real estate market that you feel will fit your goals is a great way to end up miserable. 

So, I would try to gauge the perception because that is mostly actually affects you.

Do you know your actual amount of taxable profit on the flip?

They claim that their clients are seeing a large return on their investment but would love to hear from somoene who has actually worked with them. 

Based on the information provided, you can only claim a capital loss when you actually sell or dispose of your REIT investment, not when the REIT simply returns a portion of your principal.
