And if they were also black, like a wrought iron look, it would also tie in more of the black, and I think they should be bigger.  

I mean BIG quake, the 7s, 8s and 9s where the Marina is 50% red-tagged and freeways are flattened.

Also besides the total loss of the structure to a quake I worry about the normal 1 or 2 a year big enough to knock things over and hurt people.

I would do it with wrought iron, aluminum or composite on the sides and the gate.

While there are earthquakes, I am not aware of any damage ever caused by an earth quake.

Are they retro fitted for earth quakes?
