I was thinking mostly rocks with some succulents (native for San Diego area!).

We have lots of Palm trees and Saguaro Cactus and Citrus (Grape Fruit, Oranges, Lemons) & succulents. 

We plant mostly succulents and shrubs and maintain them with a drip system.

Thanks @Michael Baum  was planning to have my cleaner add some small succulents or fake plants.

and it gets more rain so we could grow more water loving plants there as here in Socal we are restricted to drought tolerant plants ie sallow cacti and succulents.

We removed all the trees, shrubs, lawns, planted succulents and replaced the lawns with rocks.

Plant succulents of plants that need very little water and very little maintenance.
