You might check on water purifiers too, try a small unit at the tap, if that works, consider a large unit or other smaller ones.Do you have a lead pipe as the water supply from the well or city water?

Again, not my cup of tee personally, but if you want it as a wealth preservation hedge, I think there are better ways.If the SHTF really, then I'd rather have guns & ammo, canned food, a water purifier, farmland, and fish hooks before I'd want to own gold ... and these things are all less costly than gold as an added bonus.

You are looking at wiping down all surfaces, including walls and ceilings, with chemicals, running an air purifier or ionizer, replacing all carpeting, and that still may not take care of it.Hopefully their security deposit was a big one and you can get them out of there soon.
