I was looking at acrylic tubs on the medium range of 550 each.

Acrylic can be solid-set which makes breaking less of a problem.

As far as repainting, oil prime and apply 2 coats of 100% acrylic top coat.

The bm advance paint (requires primer) is a hybrid oil/acrylic paint that levels out beautifully and dries very hard.

Repair: are they applying new enamel, overlaying a new acrylic liner, or doing a full replacement of the tub?
