The tenants just bought a house of their own which is why they vacated a few months early, so I hate to ding them at a time when they are likely a little cash poor, but, it has now been a month and all I have done is run down leads, gotten a few things started, and I'm still digging on prices and reasonable rates....I am still going to come up just over $1000 short on the recovery....

Given the small amount of the debt and the unlikelihood of a successful recovery, it is not worthwhile.If you want to enforce the debt in NY, you will need to research their laws, but it will likely be unenforceable or too expensive to bother with.Most landlords do exactly what it is your doing.

The sheer logistics of completing search and recovery; clearing the largely incinerated, and toxic, debris field (including hundreds upon hundreds of burned out cars); re-establishing utility main feeds and key branch lines; all while respecting the affected residents AND maintaining security is absolutely monumental.
