In order to save some serious money while not being able to stomach the paneling look on the half of the house that didn't have to be drywalled, I filled the cracks of the paneling with drywall mud and painted over that.  

You may be able to scrape some of the mud off the old to try to get it closer.

If this area is less desirable, you will need to use comps only in the same undesirable area.

After looking at it, it does appear that he did re-Sheetrock the entire house, however, apparently part of his sheet rocking is to not mud and tape the seams for that typical finished look.
