That is part of the reason I'm not sure it matters as much whether I am in my home market or not - other than the fact that I have greater knowledge of the local market.

Since you’ll be saving your own living expenses by living in one of the units as required by the VA (to the best of my knowledge.) pretend you are paying rent and it should make your numbers look much better. 

CPAs generally have more knowledge about general accounting but it is ultimately up to the individual person to take it a step farther to get more specialized.
