So, two questions arise; 1 - can this strategy work in a NORMAL period of economic activity, and 2 - can this strategy work in a difficult economic period?   

Federal land in the middle of nowhere does not solve the crisis, crisis can be solved by smarter planning, better use of land and getting politicians to cut through the red tape where costs to develop are astronomical. 

It’s also worth considering things like the local market conditions, return on investment, population and job growth trends, and other economic indicators.

A scholarship because of good grades is huge, as school debt can really be a drag on your economic future depending on your profession.

The people in STR as a business, as opposed to just an investment, will be profitable in most economic markets.

A few general tips - look for markets with strong economic growth - job growth, population growth, network with other investors in your area and check which states they are investing in, for out-of-state investing - work with someone who has your best interests at heart and is also an investor who can easily plug you in with their network (GCs, lenders, PMs).
